WE DID IT. At 4:00pm on Friday 15th June the four cyclist and two support team members simultaneously crossed the finishing line at John O'Groats. We have all now returned to Essex, weary but pleased with our effort. The full story will appear shortly together with pictures (once the films have been developed)
Now here's a problem, you want to do something special to mark the start of the new millennium (well it really did start on 1st January 2001), you usually have a week's cycling holiday every year with some mates. What do you do ?The answer for these six madmen is to take on Britain's ultimate cycling challenge, Land's End to John O'Groats, but this will be no cycling holiday, around a thousand miles in two weeks, so a little help might be needed. Oh, and whilst undertaking such a test, why not try and help some others at the same time! Who are these madmen, they are Alan, Chris, Dave, Kevin, Peter and Stuart, and you can read what they have to say about themselves here :- The Cyclists The help, you rope in one wife and a friend who works for a car company and just happens to have a large vehicle. Why, so they can carry all the luggage (and a spare bike just in case). Do the food shopping and help if there are any problems, so you can concentrate on the cycling. Who are these poor victims :- The Support Team How can you help others, the obvious is to get sponsorship and give the money to deserving charities, in our case we have chosen to support Lupus UK, Macmillan Cancer Relief and the British Heart Foundation. Now to be successful, you can't just turn up at Land's End and start pedaling. You need to do some serious training, to plan your route and book places to stay each night. The shortest route is using the Motorways and A Roads but on a bicycle this would be illegal and not a very pleasant trip, so after consulting various sources we have planned a route that should be enjoyable as well as getting us to John O'Groats in 14 days. As well as obtaining sponsorship to complete the ride, there are a number of firms and individuals who have help make this event possible, and we would like to thank them for their assistance. We hope to post regular progress reports and pictures during the ride, but that will depend on getting internet access as we travel. If we can't manage it as we go along, we will publish them when we get home. We hope you enjoy our website, for best results it should be viewed on a screen set to 1024x768 resolution. maps. If you would like to get in touch with the team, you can e-mail us at nhbc@btinternet.com
